Acknowledging SA Media Freedom Day

Hmm, what am I inspired to blog about today? Let’s see…

How wonderful to enjoy this freedom of expression. Imagine if it were axed?

Today is Media Freedom Day here in South Africa, kicking off the Right2Know Week of Action campaign. The objective is to lobby our government to “Stop the Secrecy Bill! Let the Truth Be Told!”. The bill is before Parliament as I write. It could “have the combined effect of fundamentally undermining the right to access information and freedom of expression enshrined in the Constitution.”

If you care to add your name to the list, which includes such luminaries as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nadine Gordimer and Prof. Kader Asmal, click here: Sign On!

To offset the sombreness of the message, these two pics remind us that it pays to look up. I shot them just over our road this morning, to share a taste of the Jacaranda trees that are blossoming everywhere. Please excuse the imperfect focus – it was a bit windy.

JACARANDA TREE IN BLOOM - Johannesburg, South Africa

And here’s a quote to go with that:

“An optimist is the human personification of spring.” – Susan J. Bissonette

On that note, I’m rooting for the Secrecy Bill to be stopped!

It is simply outrageous that – after all this country has achieved – they want to take such a giant step back into the past πŸ™
The tree pics are uplifting πŸ™‚

Naomi October 19, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Too right, Cindy. Glad you enjoyed the trees – aren’t they just stunning at the moment?!

I so agree with you guys. You have made such heroic forays into human rights and other issues. I hope this doesn’t happen.

Thankfully the JACARANDA TREE needs only the law of nature to express itself – and that you listened, Naomi.

Naomi October 20, 2010 at 9:52 am

Thank you, Amy – loving nature’s lessons πŸ™‚

As you know from my eggplant blog, freedom of expression is fundamental to a healthy society. Of course, certain responsibilities come with it. Can’t imagine losing it. And love your jacaranda photos. I have a jacaranda and it’s not nearly so lovely.

Naomi October 20, 2010 at 4:33 pm

I remember that great post of yours, Tammy. Hopefully your Jacaranda will mature in loveliness πŸ™‚

I learn something every time I read your blog, Naomi. Thanks for this and for the beautiful blossom which so brightens my Autumn!

Naomi October 21, 2010 at 10:42 am

As I learn from yours, Kate! So glad the blossoms added some brightness for you πŸ™‚

I love the pictures of the Jacarada trees. They have long been some of my favourites!

If the Secrecy Bill goes ahead and is passed, then the spin doctors have succeeded. When I see and hear them on TV I just have to switch off… Have you signed the petition on Fb?

Naomi October 21, 2010 at 9:28 pm

Will check that one out, Adee, thank you – I’ve only come across this Right2Know one so far. Can’t help but love those trees πŸ™‚

thysleroux October 21, 2010 at 3:40 pm

I truly love the Jacarandas.
Next time you could shoot some of them here in the “Jacaranda City” of Pretoria πŸ™‚

Your “out of focus” pics look better than my “in-focus” efforts!

Naomi October 21, 2010 at 9:23 pm

Thanks, Thys, you’re too kind! Driving around Jo’burg I often think of Pretoria and imagine the Jacarandas being even more stunning there πŸ™‚

Your beautiful Spring is mirroring my beautiful Autumn here in NC! Just posted a slide show of photos taken this week!. And BTW – out of focus, my eye! (Maybe it pays to be a bit far sighted!) Beautiful photos!!

Freedom: “Freedom ain’t a state like Maine or Virginia, freedom ain’t across some county line, freedom is a flame that burns within you! Freedom’s in the State of Mind!” (From the musical, “Shenandoah,” by Geld & Udell)

Naomi October 22, 2010 at 1:40 pm

Thanks so much for the compliment and great quote, Paula! I’ll be over to your lovely blog asap to see your Autumn pics!

I have noted that this is in your legislature and am saddened to see it. You have already fought for so much. All things considered, Naomi, you are brave to post this. I hope the good guys win. I am with you in spirit and in prayer.

Thanks for the photographs of the jacarnda. I’ve read about them. Never seen one.
